England batsman Joe Root has been rested for the upcoming one-off Twenty20 International and five-match ODI series against Australia.
Root has enjoyed a prolific summer, scoring 460 runs at an average of 57.50 in the recently concluded Ashes series against Australia. As a result, he was named England’s Player of the Series.
Meanwhile, all-rounder Moeen Ali and pace bowler Chris Woakes have both been included in the Twenty20 and ODI squad, while uncapped left-arm seamer Reece Topley is set to make his Twenty20 International debut as he was included in the squad on the back of his sensational performance in the Natwest T20 Blast, where he took 16 wickets at a brilliant average of 22.03.
However, there was no place in either squad for Jonathan Bairstow even though he made a game-winning 83 to lead England to a 3-2 win over New Zealand in their ODI series in June.
“We have made some significant progress in our limited overs cricket this summer and the next six games allow these players to continue testing themselves against one of the very best sides in the world,” national selector James Whitaker said. “This is primarily a young group of players and the next three weeks will provide them with valuable experience as we continue to identify players who can take our limited overs cricket forward over the next four years.
“On behalf of the selectors I would like to wish Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss all the very best for what I’m sure will be a very competitive and entertaining series.”
