For the third time in this two-match Test series, an entire day was washed out due to heavy, persistent rain caused by Cyclone Komen.

Both Bangladesh and South Africa had not even arrived at the ground when umpires decided to abandon play for the day at 12pm.

Bangladesh ended day one on a disappointing note as they lost four key wickets – Mahmudullah, captain Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan – for 66 runs.

The first day also proved to be a historic one for South Africa pace bowler Dale Steyn as he became only the 13th player to take 400 Test wickets. Together with Duminy, Steyn ripped through Bangladesh’s line-up and finished with three wickets, while Duminy ended the day with the same number of scalps.

With more rain forecast for the coming days, it is highly likely that the second Test, like the first Test, will end as a draw. Should this be the case, the series will end as a 0-0 draw and the trophy will be shared.
