Australia opener Chris Rogers made a career-best 158 not out and batsman Steven Smith scored an unbeaten 129 to leave England in dire straits on the first day of the second Test at Lord’s.

Australia captain Michael Clarke would have been delighted with his decision to bat first as Rogers and David Warner amassed a 78-run partnership before Warner was caught by James Anderson off the bowling of Moeen Ali for 38.

However, that was to be England’s only piece of success during the entire day as Rogers and Smith went on to muster an unbeaten 259-run stand, during which Rogers brought up his fifth Test century and Smith his 10th, before stumps was called.

Rogers ended up finishing on 158 off 282 balls, which included 25 boundaries, while Smith remained undefeated on 129 off 217 deliveries, which included 13 boundaries and a six.
