The West Indies found themselves in deep trouble after Australia batsman Steven Smith made a career-best 199 on the second day of the second Test in Jamaica.

Starting out the day on 258/4, Smith and Shane Watson only added six runs to their 48-run partnership before Watson was clean bowled by Jerome Taylor for 25.

Brad Haddin managed to make 22 runs before he was cleaned up by Taylor as well.

Mitchell Johnson only made five runs before he was caught by Darren Bravo off the bowling of Kemar Roach.

Mitchell Starc fared no better as he was clean bowled by Jason Holder for six runs.

Smith and Josh Hazlewood stemmed the bleeding with a 63-run partnership before Smith was given out lbw off the bowling of Taylor.

Smith decided to review the decision, but replays showed that the ball was pitching in line and hitting leg stump. This led to the third umpire upholding the original decision.

Smith’s career-best knock of 199 came off 361 balls and included 21 boundaries and two sixes.

Australia were bowled out for 399 when Hazlewood was caught by Jermaine Blackwood at long-on off the bowling of Veerasammy Permaul for 24.

Taylor was the pick of the bowlers with six wickets, while Holder snapped up two and Roach and Permaul chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Taylor finished with career-best figures of 6-47 off 25 overs

Trailing by 399, none of the West Indies batsmen, with the exception of Blackwood, made any useful contributions.

Blackwood scored 51 off 80 balls, which included seven boundaries and a six, while the next highest score after his was Shai Hope’s 26.

With the West Indies losing a wicket on the last ball of the day, Holder remained undefeated on 13 when stumps was called.

Hazlwood and Nathan Lyon were responsible for inflicting the most damage as they took three wickets apiece, while Starc and Johnson claimed one wicket each.

The West Indies ended day two on 143/8 and will continue batting tomorrow at 10:00 local time or 15:00 GMT.
