Ronchi went on to score 88 off 70 deliveries, which included 13 boundaries and three sixes, before he was caught by Anderson at fine leg off the bowling of Broad.
Tim Southee failed to have an impact with the bat as he was caught by Adam Lyth at deep square leg off the bowling of Wood for one run.
Mark Craig and Matt Henry amassed an unbeaten 16-run partnership before stumps was called.
Craig finished on 16 off 42 balls, which included two boundaries, while Henry remained undefeated on 14 off 10 deliveries, which included three boundaries.
Broad was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Anderson and Wood snapped up two and Stokes chipped in with one.
New Zealand ended day one on 297/8 and will continue batting tomorrow at 11:00 local time or 10:00 GMT.
