The West Indies walked away with the upper hand on the first day of the third Test in Barbados despite England captain Alastair Cook’s first Test century since May 2013.

Cook was well supported by all-rounder Moeen Ali, who made 58.

Cook would have been regretting his decision to bat first after Jonathan Trott, Gary Ballance and Ian Bell were dismissed in quick succession.

Struggling at 38/3, Cook and Joe Root amassed a 53-run partnership before Root was caught behind off the bowling of Veerasammy Permaul for 33.

Cook and Ali kept the runs flowing with a 98-run partnership, during which both batsmen brought up their half-centuries, before Ali was run out by debutant Shai Hope for 58 off 130 balls, which included eight boundaries and a six.

Ben Stokes scored 22 runs before he was caught by Hope at gully off the bowling of Shannon Gabriel.

Cook went on to make 105 off 266 balls, which included 12 boundaries, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Marlon Samuels.

Following Cook’s dismissal, the umpires decided to bring play to an end for the day.

Gabriel and Jason Holder picked up two wickets apiece, while Samuels and Permaul claimed one wicket each.

England ended day one on 240/7 and will continue batting tomorrow at 10:00 local time or 14:00 GMT.
