Heavy rain led to a large portion of the second day being abandoned

Despite the South African fans having the opportunity to watch batsman Faf du Plessis make another Test century, their hopes of watching more entertaining Test cricket were dashed when heavy rain ruined a majority of the second day of the second Test in Port Elizabeth.

Starting out the day on 270/2, du Plessis and South Africa captain Hashim Amla only added four runs to their 44-run partnership, during which du Plessis brought up his fourth Test century, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Jerome Taylor.

Du Plessis was not given out initially, but the West Indies decided to review the decision. Replays showed that the du Plessis did in fact edge the ball and as a result, the third umpire overturned the original decision.

Du Plessis’ brilliant knock of 103 came off 230 balls and included 13 boundaries and two sixes.

Amla and AB de Villiers managed to amass an unbeaten 15-run partnership before the heavens parted.

With the rain refusing to relent, the umpires had no choice but to bring play to a close for the day.

Amla finished on 23 off 49 balls, which included one boundary, while de Villiers remained undefeated on nine off 18 deliveries, which included two boundaries.

Taylor was the only bowler to take a wicket on the second day.

South Africa ended day two on 289/3 and will continue batting tomorrow at 10:30 local time or 08:30 GMT.
