The Sydney Thunder’s opening duo of Jacques Kallis and Michael Hussey smashed 97 and 96 respectively to pulverise the Brisbane Heat by 56 runs at Stadium Australia.

Heat captain James Hopes would have been regretting his decision to bowl first after Kallis and Hussey amassed a 160-run partnership, during which both batsmen brought up their half-centuries, before Hussey was caught behind off the bowling of Cameron Gannon just four agonising runs short of his century.

Hussey’s brilliant inningsĀ of 96 came off 60 balls and included six boundaries and seven sixes.

Thanks to Kallis’ unbeaten knock of 97, which came off 55 deliveries and included seven boundaries and six sixes, the Thunder finished on 208/1 off their 20 overs.

Gannon was the only bowler to take a wicket.

Chasing a mammoth total of 209 to win, the Heat got off to a horrible start as it only took Gurinder Sandhu three balls to dismiss debutant Simon Milenko for a golden duck.

Daniel Christian only made eight runs before he was clean bowled by Kallis.

Joe Burns and Chris Lynn stabilised the innings with a 59-run partnership before Burns was caught by Kallis off the bowling of Sandhu for 28.

Lynn went on to score 40 before he was caught by Nathan Hauritz at backward point off the bowling of Andrew McDonald.

Nathan Reardon top-scored with 49 runs, which came off 25 balls and included five boundaries and three sixes, before he was caught by Hussey at cover point off the bowling of Sandhu.

Jimmy Peirson made 16 runs before he was caught by Hussey at cover off the bowling of McDonald.

McDonald struck again just two balls later when Andrew Flintoff was caught by Sandhu at long-off for a duck.

Daniel Vettori failed to trouble the scorers as well as he was cleaned up by Dirk Nannes for a duck.

Hopes could not save his team as he was clean bowled by Pat Cummins for one run.

The Heat were bowled out for 152 just four balls later when Cummins cleaned up Ryan Duffield for one run.

Sandhu and McDonald picked up three wickets apiece, while Cummins snapped up two and Kallis and Nannes claimed one wicket each.

Kallis was named Man of the Match.
