The Sydney Sixers have signed Australia and Tasmania opening batsman Ed Cowan for the upcoming edition of the Big Bash League (BBL).

Cowan will replace Marcus North, who recently decided to retire from all forms of cricket.

Cowan represented the Sixers in one match during the inaugural edition of the BBL in 2011 before he was called up to the country’s Test squad.

“Marcus will be a big loss to the Sixers this year, due to his batting, off-spin bowling and experience,” Sixers general manager Dominic Remond said. “We are however, very pleased to be able to replace that experience with Ed.

“Whilst not a traditional T20 big hitter, Ed is a great worker of the ball and [is] able to turn the strike over, crucial even in the shorter version of the game. His experience on the big stage and calm nature will be a big benefit to the club.”
