Plans to build a two-lane flyover just 20 metres north of the Basin Reserve in Wellington have been scrapped after it was turned down by an independent board of inquiry.
Cricket Wellington allowed the project to go ahead after the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) assured them that suitable protection would be provided for the flyover.
According to sources, the NZTA had suggested building a 12-metre high pavilion to block the flyover.
The Basin Reserve will only host one match during the 2014-15 season, which will be the second Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka from January 3, 2015.
The ground will not host any of the World Cup matches since all matches in Wellington will be played at the Westpac stadium.
