The Sydney Thunder have appointed South Africa’s performance director Paddy Upton as their head coach for this year’s Big Bash League (BBL).

Upton, who is also the head coach of the Rajasthan Royals, will replace Chandika Hathurusingha as New South Wales’ assistant coach.

Hathurusingha left his post at New South Wales after he was appointed as Bangladesh’s head coach.

“It’s exciting to be able to work with a team that’s got so much to win and so much to play for,” Upton said. “It’s about harnessing what the younger, less experienced players have got to offer because their contributions are going to be as key to the Thunder’s success as Mike Hussey’s.

“I will look to get those senior players more engaged with the younger players than any other team would be doing.”
