South Africa batsman Hashim Amla has announced that he is willing to become the country’s next Test captain following the retirement of Graeme Smith in March.
Amla, who resigned as vice-captain of South Africa’s limited overs teams in February last year, has had a change of heart after he was notified that the selection panel were considering him as one of the potential candidates to replace Smith as captain.
“There is no point me being vice-captain if I am not going to captain when the captain isn’t around,” Amla had said in January last year.
Amla is now in a race against three other candidates, who are AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis and Jean Paul (JP) Duminy.
