Hussey scored a spectacular half-century

Former Australia all-rounder David Hussey and batsman Glenn Maxwell demolished the Sydney Sixers to lead the Melbourne Stars to a convincing 77-run win at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Hussey smashed a magnificent half-century, while Maxwell hammered a quickfire 37 and took three wickets.

Sixers captain Moises Henriques won the toss and chose to bowl first.

However, he would have been pondering over whether he made the right decision as opening batsman Luke Wright was caught behind off the bowling of Steve O’Keefe for 28.

Cameron White only managed to score nine runs before being clean bowled by Josh Hazlewood.

Just two balls later, Brad Hodge was walking back to the pavilion after being caught behind for a duck.

Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade and all-rounder David Hussey amassed a 74-run partnership before Wade was clean bowled by Ravi Bopara for 36.

Glenn Maxwell smashed a quickfire 37 before he was caught by Josh Lalor at short third man off the bowling of Hazlewood.

The Stars eventually finished on 200/5 at the end of their 20 overs thanks to Hussey’s unbeaten 50 off 41 deliveries, which included five boundaries.

Hazlewood was the pick of the bowlers for the Sixers as he took three wickets, while Bopara and O’Keefe chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 201 to win, the Sixers got off to a solid start as their opening pair of Michael Lumb and Nic Maddinson put together a 49-run partnership before Lumb was clean bowled by Jackson Bird for 29.

Maddinson managed to make 18 runs before being caught behind off the bowling of John Hastings.

Marcus North added 23 runs and Henriques chipped in with 17 before the Sixers entire batting line-up collapsed.

The Sixers were put out of their misery when they were bowled out for a dismal 123, leaving them 77 runs short of their target.

Maxwell was the most successful bowler for the Stars as he picked up three wickets, while Bird, Hastings, Hussey, Clint McKay and James Faulkner all snapped up one wicket each.
