Morkel is still recovering from a grade one ankle ligament injury
South Africa are still pondering over whether to allow pace bowler Morne Morkel to play against India in the second Test in Durban after he sustained a grade one ankle ligament injury just five days ago.
South Africa team manager and doctor Mohammed Moosajee noted that Morkel’s injury would take between seven and ten days to fully heal.
However, even though South Africa captain Graeme Smith stated that Morkel only had a 20 per cent chance of playing in the upcoming Test, he has not fully given up on his lanky pace bowler, who was seen bowling, although not at full pace, in Durban.
If Morkel is not fit enough to play, South Africa will have to replace him with either Rory Kleinveldt or Kyle Abbott.
“Luckily, we haven’t had too many serious injuries to our frontline seamers and we have performances from guys who have been around the squad,” Smith said. “Kyle played one Test and has done well and Rory had a taste of international cricket at its toughest in Australia. We have enough bases covered.”
