“I never threatened Sachin’s place in the team as a batsman but he sometimes threatened mine as a bowler”

Former India leg-spinner Anil Kumble has revealed that Sachin Tendulkar “threatened” his place in the national team at times since “he was a natural spinner of the ball”.

Kumble also lauded Tendulkar’s longevity in the international game, stating that he “has spanned three generations of cricketers starting from Kapil Dev to Shikhar Dhawan”.

“I have played 132 Tests with Sachin,” Kumble said. “I never threatened Sachin’s place in the team as a batsman but he sometimes threatened mine as a bowler. He was a natural spinner of the ball.

“In 1989, when I made my debut for Karnataka, another man, a 16-year old, was making his debut for India. Sachin has spanned three generations of cricketers starting from Kapil Dev to Shikhar Dhawan. Few players have done as much as Sachin to alter the perception of the game in our country.”
