“Hopefully, we can find overdrive in Australia and create another piece of history”
England off-spinner Graeme Swann has announced that his side “thoroughly deserved to beat Australia 3-0 this summer” since they were playing at their very best.
Swann also dismissed Australia coach Darren Lehmann’s comments about England playing “boring cricket”.
“We thoroughly deserved to beat Australia 3-0 this summer – and we did it without playing at our best,” Swann wrote in his column for The Sun. “Darren Lehmann says we played boring cricket during our victory at home but I reckon that’s just him cranking up the phoney war.
“It comes as no surprise to hear the opposition saying critical stuff about us – because we won in the summer. To win a fourth successive Ashes series would put us among the history makers of English cricket.”
The 34-year-old also noted that England would only be able to win four times in a row, a feat they have not accomplished since the 19th century, if they posted bigger totals.
“More than anything, that means applying pressure by piling up big totals,” Swann wrote. “Certainly, we need to up our game a little from this summer because I don’t think we performed as well as we could.
“But 3-0 didn’t flatter us. The difference between the two teams – regardless of what brand of cricket we supposedly played – was that we got into winning positions and took them. And we did it without hitting top gear and that’s the sign of a good team.
