Pietersen granted compassionate leave, does not travel to Australia with Ashes squad

Pietersen is England’s highest run-scorer in all formats

England batsman Kevin Pietersen has not flown to Australia with the rest of the Ashes squad after he was granted compassionate leave by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

It is understood that Pietersen will join up with the rest of his team-mates in Perth on October 27.

It is also understood that Pietersen was granted compassionate leave following the death of a close friend.

England will play their first warm-up game against Western Australia in Perth on October 31.

Pietersen was presented with a silver bat during the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval this summer after becoming the country’s highest run-scorer in all formats.
