Ballance, Stokes and Rankin are the three new faces in the squad

Zimbabwe-born batsman Gary Ballance, all-rounder Ben Stokes and rangy pace bowler Boyd Rankin have all been included in England’s Ashes squad for their tour of Australia in November.

Michael Carberry also makes a return to the Test squad, while spinner Monty Panesar makes his comeback as well.

Panesar’s inclusion comes as a surprise to many, especially after he was caught urinating on bouncers outside a Brighton nightclub.

“Monty had his problems which we have worked hard to rectify – and he has worked hard to rectify – in the last six weeks or so,” national selector Geoff Miller said. “There is a very strong management in that side to help with all aspects. He appreciates he has made errors and he is very sure those errors are behind him.”

Surrey pace bowler Chris Tremlett finally earned himself a recall as well after finishing with 32 wickets in the recent county season.

All-rounder Tim Bresnan was also included in the squad as he is confident of making his comeback after sustaining a lower back stress fracture during the fourth Ashes Test in Durham.

“He will go out with the squad and when the time is right Andy will look at whether he can stay with the squad or transfer into the Performance Programme,” Miller said.
