Cox’s Bazar is Bangladesh’s most popular tourist destination
Bangladesh were given a major boost for the 2014 International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20 after it was announced that they had been granted government land to build a new international stadium in the town of Cox’s Bazar.
The announcement was made during an inter-ministerial meeting for the tournament when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina instructed the civil aviation authority to hand over the town’s golf course to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Many past BCB presidents have tried extremely hard to submit a bid to build a stadium in the country’s most popular tourist destination.
“The decision to build a stadium in Cox’s Bazar was among the primary decisions taken during the meeting,” sports secretary Noor Mohammad said. “The land belongs to the civil aviation authority, so the BCB will sit with them to build the ground. They will understand the technical issues better. The sports ministry will also assist in whichever way necessary.”
The BCB stated that they will be looking to host the women’s World Twenty20 in the town, which is famous for having the longest sea beach in the world.
