A BATTING WITH BIMAL BREAKING REPORT: The new ICC rules are having a negative impact on spinners, says Mahela Jayawardene

Jayawardene is worried that the number of spinners may start to dwindle in the near future

Sri Lanka ODI captain Mahela Jayawardene has called for an end to the new International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, stating that they are having an extremely negative impact on spinners.

Jayawardene noted that spinners have no incentive to take risks anymore since there are only four fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle during non-designated powerplay overs.

“The spinners are being taken away from the game, to be honest,” Jayawardene said. “Most of the spinners are being very negative now.

“They are bowling overs aiming for fewer runs rather than trying to take wickets and use their variety, unless you are a top spinner and use a lot of variety, you can survive while the rest will struggle and be negative in their approach.”

The ICC will test their new rules, which also include two new balls at both ends and two bouncers per over, over a 12 month period before deciding to make any changes.

Jayawardene stated that spinners tend to bowl much flatter and quicker now since they know that there is not as much protection in the deep as there used to be.
