Warne has warned Cricket Australia about the dangers of sending rookies to India
Former Australia ‘spin king’ Shane Warne has urged captain Michael Clarke and the rest of the selectors to pick experienced spinners over rookies when the national team tour India later this month.
Warne believes that the subcontinent is no place for a rookie to play since he will get absolutely massacred by the Indian batsmen and find it extremely difficult to adjust to the conditions.
However, Warne’s warnings may go unheeded as Cricket Australia have announced that they are considering including Queensland’s Cameron Boyce or Sydney’s Adam Zampa for the tour of India.
In response to the announcement, Warne stated that young spinners needed to fully develop their game at the domestic level before even being considered for international duty.
Another crisis that Cricket Australia are currently facing is that of who will replace batting duo Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey after both veterans announced their retirements recently.
With Phillip Hughes more than likely to take Ponting’s spot and batsman Usman Khawaja and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell battling it out for Hussey’s place, Warne feels as if veteran Brad Hodge, who no longer plays first-class cricket, should be considered as well.
Hodge, according to Warne, is in the best form of his life and would be a perfect fit since he would add some experience to an otherwise amateur middle order.
Continuing to push Hodge’s case, Warne noted that Australia should not be picking youngsters just for the sake of it and instead look to maximise the potential out of the remaining seniors they have in their stocks.
Hussey himself only made his Test debut at the age of 30 after playing 11 seasons of first-class cricket and Warne believes this is exactly the way Australia should be selecting all of their players.
