Watson’s decision to become a specialist batsman could undo everything he has worked for in his entire career

Injury-plagued Australian all-rounder Shane Watson could lose his spot on the Test team if he decides to quit bowling in order to prolong his international career, according to Cricket Australia high performance manager Pat Howard.

But, Howard noted that Cricket Australia would like nothing more than to see Watson carry on bowling since he has become one of the most economical bowlers the country has to offer.

According to News.com.au, Watson, who has been struggling in the past number of series due to a calf injury, has been contemplating whether to become a specialist Test batsman or remain as the side’s go-to all-rounder.

However, if Watson were to become a specialist batsman, not only would his spot on the Test team be in jeopardy, but his multi-million dollar Indian Premier League (IPL) contract could dwindle down to be worth absolutely nothing.

Watson’s batting record in Test cricket has been extremely disappointing, considering all the success he has had in the limited overs format, as he has only managed to score two centuries in 38 Tests at a dismal average of 37.02.

With his poor batting record and constantly succumbing to injuries, Watson will more than likely lose his place on the Test squad if he were to give up bowling.

While Cricket Australia are allowing Watson to keep hold of his spot for the moment, Howard issued a warning to the all-rounder, stating that the board would not hesitate to remove him from the side if his performances with both bat and ball continue to be under par.
