A BATTING WITH BIMAL BREAKING REPORT: Kumar Sangakkara joins 10,000 runs club

Sangakkara equalled the fastest record for scoring 10,000 Test runs

Sri Lanka wicketkeeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara has become only the 11th player in cricketing history to score 10,000 Test runs and he now joins an elite club which boasts members such as former West Indies batsman Brian Lara, India’s Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar and ex-Australia skipper Ricky Ponting.

Sangakkara achieved the milestone after cracking a glorious cover drive off the bowling of Australia pace bowler Mitchell Johnson just before the lunch break on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test.

The wicketkeeper batsman reached 10,000 runs in 195 innings, which equals the fastest record also held by Lara and Tendulkar.

Sangakkara has represented Sri Lanka in 115 Tests and currently holds a career average of 55.80.

The only other Sri Lankan batsman to have scored more than 10,000 runs is Sangakkara’s long-time team-mate Mahela Jayawardene.
