Sammy feels as if batsmen are going to be the sole beneficiaries of the new fielding restricitions
West Indies captain Darren Sammy believes the new International Cricket Council (ICC) fielding restriction rules is going to make life much tougher for spinners during ODIs since fewer fielders are allowed in the deep.
Sammy also stated that the rule affects all international teams instead of only subcontinent nations, who usually tend to rely on their spinners to provide a majority of the wickets during matches.
Under the new ICC rules, only four fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle instead of regular five.
Sammy noted that the new rules would benefit batsmen hugely since they will be able to score runs much more easily.
“It is becoming more of a batsman’s game,” Sports24 quoted Sammy as saying. “Teams were scoring 300-plus with five guys outside the circle. Now it is only four.
“I feel sorry for the spinners, they have to find an extra way to bowl and be economical.”
Sammy once again denied that subcontinent teams would suffer the brunt of the new rules.
“The rules are the same for every team,” Sammy added. “It is not the first time rules have changed, it won’t be the last time. We have to enjoy the game we love, playing cricket.”
