Bailey only had one good innings throughout the entire World Twenty20

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has launched a scathing attack against the national selectors, stating that their decision to appoint George Bailey as captain of the nation’s Twenty20 squad has handicapped the rest of the team.

Chappell, who is a prominent commentator during international matches, also believes that there are far more better players who deserve to be selected ahead of Bailey.

The former captain further mentioned that the Victorian trio of Glenn Maxwell, Cameron White and David Hussey all deserved a spot in the middle order of Australia’s lineup ahead of Bailey.

Bailey made his captaincy debut in February 2012 and boasts a highest score of 63 against the West Indies in the semi-finals of the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20, during which Australia were knocked out of the competition.

Chappell was also extremely frustrated at the fact that David Hussey only played one match throughout the entire World Twenty20, which came in the semi-final against the West Indies.

News.com.au quoted Chappell as saying: “They (Australia) are handicapping themselves when they are leaving David Hussey out of the lineup, and the handicap has come about because they have picked a captain and then they have picked a team around the captain and that is not the Australian way of doing it.”

“When you are fitting George Bailey in and one of David Hussey, Glenn Maxwell or Cameron White is going to miss out, three pretty dynamic middle-order players, it’s a mistake and it’s a handicap for Australia,” Chappell added.

Chappell hinted that the only way to get rid of this problem would be to remove Bailey from the squad, and he knows that this is extremely unlikely to happen.

“There is only one way around it but that’s not going to happen. The other reason it doesn’t make a lot of sense is because Australia have struggled a bit against spin bowling and you have David Hussey who is a very, very good player of spin bowling and a dynamic player who can hit sixes,” he said.
