Pietersen and Knight have never really seen eye to eye
Former England batsman Nick Knight believes that the current squad will be better off without the flamboyant big-hitting Kevin Pietersen, who recently shocked the cricketing community by deciding to retire from limited overs cricket.
Knight, who currently has a very frosty relationship with Pietersen, noted that England should perform better in ODIs without the superstar batsman.
Just last month, Pietersen was fined by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for questioning whether Knight was worthy of being a Sky Test match commentator via his Twitter account.
Knight, who was noted for his excellence in the ODI format, said: “England’s 50-over side will be slightly better for having Kevin Pietersen out, because it has not been his bag, the recent two to three years have shown his returns have been well below the expectations for him. He has finished with two hundreds [against Pakistan in UAE], but generally he has been below par.”
Pietersen, scored more than 4000 runs in his ODI career at an average of just over 41, and was recently looking in excellent form with two back to back centuries against Pakistan.
“It is a brave thing to say because the obvious talent is there. I have looked at the statistics, and they do not add up – so you ask why and look deeper into it. I think he is right to say he has had enough and move on. that is why I think England are in a better position going forward, because they will have 11 players who are right behind one-day cricket,” Knight added.
