Gayle showed England no mercy in the second ODI when he scored a quick-fire 53 runs

West Indies Chairman of selectors Clyde Butts has revealed that he is extremely excited over Chris Gayle’s return to the country’s ODI and Twenty20 squad.

Butts, stated that Gayle will bring a  ‘quality dimension’ to the West Indies team.

Gayle, who has not represented his country in over 14 months, made his return in the recently concluded ODI series against England.

“Chris is a player of proven quality and we are looking forward to him adding the new dimension to the side and his contributions as a senior member of the squad,” Butts said.

Gayle, made his return to the side, after having talks in St Vincent with his representative Michael Hall, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Julian Hunte, WICB director Elson Crick and the Board’s legal officer Alanna Medford.

The Prime Minister of St Vincent, Ralph Gonsalves, and Antigua and Barbuda, Baldwin Spencer, were also present at the high level meeting.

Gayle, who has scored 8087 runs in 228 ODIs, teamed up with captain Darren Sammy and the rest of the West Indies squad in their losing effort against England in the limited overs series.

Lendl Simmons was also recalled to the side after recovering from an injury, while Dwayne Smith also got the green light from the selectors for the first time in over two years.

Butts, noted that the current team was a reflection of what is to come in the 2015 World Cup, which will be hosted in Australia.

“A number of players, who have been exposed to international cricket, have been retained as they have performed well. There is, what we believe, is a balanced combination of young rising players like Sunil Narine in the bowling department and Johnson Charles in the top order of the batting in addition to the well-known senior internationals,” Butts said.
