Indian batting legend, Sachin Tendulkar, has handed over the Captain’s position of the Mumbai Indians to teammate, Harbhajan Singh.
Tendulkar, who has been Captain of the IPL franchise for the previous four seasons, stated that he felt as if he needed a break.
“The Mumbai Indians is more than a team. It is like a family to me. At this point of time, I feel I need a break from the responsibility of captaincy of the Mumbai Indians. After due consideration, I discussed my intention to hand over the Captain-ship of the team to Harbhajan Singh,” he said.
Mumbai Indian owners, Nita and Mukesh Ambani, have been informed about Tendulkar’s decision, and accepted the terms.
Tendulkar, was surprised that the owners handled the decision so well, and said: “I was touched by the graciousness and wholehearted support they offered me while emphasising that they would accept any decision which helps me to continue enjoying the game.”
Nita Ambani, admitted that she had been shocked by Tendulkar’s decision to step down as Captain, but, also noted that he knew what was best for himself.
“It was a very difficult moment when Sachin expressed his desire to relinquish the captaincy. But we believe that Sachin is the best judge on such matters and hence, as always, we fully support his decision,” she said.
Harbhajan Singh, upon being informed about being the new Captain of the franchise, stated that he felt honoured and that he intended to fulfill his duties to the best of his abilities.
“Sachin Paaji spoke to me about his decision of wanting me to take over the responsibility of the team. It is huge honour and I thank Paaji and Nita Bhabhi for the faith reposed in my abilities,” he said.
With Tendulkar’s decision to step down as Captain coming just two days before Mumbai go up against the defending champions, the Chennai Super Kings, fans, will be hoping that he will still be able to help Harbhajan Singh with the captaincy role, in order to win the IPL this year.
