Veteran batsman Ahmed Shehzad has revealed that former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi told him he would captain the national team after Misbah-ul-Haq’s tenure ended.

Shehzad pointed out that he held two meetings with Sethi to discuss the captaincy and was in line to take over.

However, the 34-year-old didn’t get the opportunity to step into the leadership role as he didn’t want to be a “puppet captain” under then head coach Waqar Younis. This resulted in Azhar Ali being given the position.

“PCB Chairman Najam Sethi had two meetings with me. He told me that I would become captain after Misbah. I take advice from Waqar Younis, but he wanted a puppet captain, that’s why Azhar Ali became captain,” Shehzad was quoted as saying on Facebook.

The Pakistan team recently took on South Africa at home and began by drawing the two-Test series 1-1. They then proceeded to beat the Proteas 2-1 in both the T20Is and ODIs.

After that, Pakistan faced Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series and triumphed 3-0.

The men in green are now participating in a T20I tri-series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, and have made it to the final, where they will go up against Sri Lanka on November 29.
