Harbhajan Singh: “Their star batter is Babar Azam. His average against India is 31. If you are a top batter, I believe you should have an average close to 50, which he doesn’t have”

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has questioned whether Pakistan cricketer Babar Azam really is a top batsman given his average against India.
Harbhajan noted that Azam averages 31 against the men in blue, which is not indicative of a star batsman.
Instead, he feels that the 30-year-old should be averaging close to 50 if he wants to be considered among the best of the best.
“Their star batter is Babar Azam. His average against India is 31. If you are a top batter, I believe you should have an average close to 50, which he doesn’t have,” he said on his YouTube channel as quoted by A Sports.
Azam has not been involved in Pakistan’s recent T20I assignments as he missed the three-match series against Bangladesh in Lahore, the T20I tour of Bangladesh, the T20I series against the West Indies, and the T20I tri-series against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Afghanistan.
He was also overlooked by the selectors for the 2025 Asia Cup, where the men in green made it to the final before losing to India.
Next up for Pakistan will be a home series against South Africa from October 12 to November 8.
The series will consist of two Tests, three T20Is, and three ODIs.
Pakistan squad for South Africa Test series: Shan Masood (captain), Aamer Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Asif Afridi, Babar Azam, Faisal Akram, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Kamran Ghulam, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Rizwan (wicketkeeper), Noman Ali, Rohail Nazir (wicketkeeper), Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel and Shaheen Shah Afridi
