Former Pakistan red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie believes up-and-coming batsman Irfan Khan is the “best fielder in the country”.

The 22-year-old has showcased his spectacular fielding on numerous occasions, but many ex-cricketers have chosen players like Shadab Khan when it comes to Pakistan’s top fielder.

Despite this, Gillespie has been amazed by what he has seen from the Irfan during his short stint as head coach.

“He is also the best fielder in the country,” the former Australia fast bowler was quoted as saying by Geo Super.

Irfan did not feature in the 2025 Champions Trophy, but did play in the recent five-match T20I series against New Zealand, where he mustered 36 runs in four games at an average of 12.

Pakistan and New Zealand then played a three-match ODI series and the Mianwali native featured in one game, where he took three wickets at an average of 17.

Irfan had been representing the Karachi Kings in the 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL) and prior to the tournament being postponed indefinitely due to Pakistan’s ongoing border tensions with India, he had scored 131 runs in seven matches at an average of 26.20 and a strike-rate of 131.
