Iconic Pakistan batsman Younis Khan believes Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman are the two best candidates to replace Babar Azam as limited overs captain.

Azam stepped down from the role at the beginning of October and speculation is rife about who will be named his successor.

Younis noted that Pakistan often give the captaincy to “the biggest player”, but feels this “is a mistake”.

Instead, he wants to see candidates who can actually thrive in the role given an opportunity.

In this case, he feels Rizwan and Zaman are the top two options.

“Stepping away from the captaincy will be beneficial for Babar Azam. In our culture, we often make the biggest player the captain, which I believe is a mistake. Either Mohammad Rizwan or Fakhar Zaman should be considered for the role,” the 46-year-old was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

The Pakistan team recently took on Bangladesh in a two-Test series, which they lost 2-0.

Many of the national players then featured in the Champions One-Day Cup, which was a domestic 50-over competition that took place in Faisalabad.

Pakistan are now involved in a three-match Test series against England, which is tied at 1-1.

The third Test will start on October 24 in Rawalpindi.
