Legendary speedster Waqar Younis believes it is important for Pakistan to identify which bowlers can serve the team well in Test cricket and the limited overs formats.
He pointed out that specialist bowlers are needed for Tests, ODIs and T20Is, while stressing the importance to have enough options.
Currently, the men in green have a number of bowlers featuring in multiple formats, which has raised concerns about their workload, especially since injuries are becoming increasingly common.
To stop this from happening, Waqar wants Pakistan to have a larger pool of bowlers to pick from in each form of the game, so that their main bowlers can get enough rest.
“We [Pakistan] need to identify who [our] red-ball bowlers are and which bowlers should play limited-overs cricket. We cannot mix both formats and we need to make sure we have enough bowlers too,” he was quoted as saying by journalist Farid Khan on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The Pakistan team recently took on Bangladesh in a two-Test series, which they lost 2-0.
Many of the national players then participated in the Champions One-Day Cup, which was a domestic 50-over competition that took place in Faisalabad.
The men in green are now involved in a three-match Test series against England, which is tied at 1-1.
The third Test will get underway on October 24 in Rawalpindi.
