Australia batsman Usman Khawaja wants Babar Azam to continue captaining Pakistan if he is able to.
Azam’s future as captain has been thrust into the spotlight following the men in green’s disastrous campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they were knocked out in the group stage.
Even though the 29-year-old has been bombarded by heavy criticism, Khawaja has come to his defence, insisting that he is the right man for the job.
“It’s Babar Azam’s decision to captain; if he can, he should,” he was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.
Azam was Pakistan’s highest run-scorer in the T20 World Cup, amassing 122 runs in four matches at an average of 40.66 and a strike-rate of 101.66.
The men in green started off with consecutive losses to the United States of America and India before fighting back to defeat Canada and Ireland.
Despite ending the group stage on a high, it was not enough to get them through to the Super Eights.
