Wasim Akram: “Got a bright future ahead. He’ll get the captaincy again but should focus on his game until he [does] get it”

Iconic Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram is confident that left-arm seamer Shaheen Shah Afridi will be captain again in the future.
The 24-year-old previously served as Pakistan’s T20I skipper, but only held the role for one series, which consisted of five T20Is against New Zealand in January 2024, before being replaced by Babar Azam, who took over as limited overs captain.
However, with rumours swirling that Azam could lose the leadership role, there is a possibility Afridi could return as captain.
Should this be the case, Wasim wants the talented youngster to be given at least one year to lead the team.
“At least give Shaheen a year to lead, and then he could be changed, but I don’t know. He’s an aggressive cricketer, only 23 or 24 years old, maybe younger. Got a bright future ahead. He’ll get the captaincy again but should focus on his game until he [does] get it,” he was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.
Afridi recently represented Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup and picked up five wickets in four matches at an average of 21 and an economy rate of 6.56.
The men in green lost to the United States of America and India before rebounding to beat Canada and Ireland.
Even though they won those two games, they were unable to make it through to the Super Eights.
