Former India batsman Sanjay Bangar believes Babar Azam “is still the best man to lead Pakistan” as “there is no alternative” option available.
Azam’s future as limited overs captain remains shrouded in mystery, especially after the team’s disastrous 2024 T20 World Cup campaign.
Even though the men in green were knocked out in the group stage of the tournament, Bangar insisted that Pakistan should stick with Azam.
However, he pointed out that the 29-year-old needs to work on his assertiveness, which will enhance his decision making skills.
“I still believe he is still the best man to lead Pakistan. He has to be a little bit more assertive in terms of the usage of the DRS as well. You can gauge your personality. It seems that he is letting others come into his way of decision making. So, as a captain, you have to be decisive. That’s a quality that can be slightly more assertive. That can help his decision making,” Bangar was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.
“There is no alternative as well, because Pakistan tried to do away with his captaincy after the 50-over World Cup debacle. But they had to go back to him again. It clearly shows that there are not a lot of potential captaincy candidates. So stick with Babar, give him the team, give him a good support system around him so that Pakistan can do well in the next World Cup.”
In the T20 World Cup, Azam was Pakistan’s highest run-scorer with 122 runs in four matches at an average of 40.66 and a strike-rate of 101.66.
The men in green lost to the United States of America and India before fighting back to defeat Canada and Ireland.
