Pakistan selection committee member Wahab Riaz said left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Amir could be picked more often as the men in green “have a lot of injury-prone players.”

Since workload management will be essential in the lead-up to the 2024 T20 World Cup, Wahab confirmed that the 31-year-old will be one of the players who will be utilised to ensure the other seamers are given adequate rest.

Amir reversed his decision to retire from international cricket after the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he took 10 wickets in nine matches for the Quetta Gladiators at an average of 28.60 and an economy rate of 8.41.

Wahab acknowledged the veteran pace bowler did well in PSL 9 and thus feels he deserves the chances that are coming his way.

“Going forward, we have a lot of injury-prone players and Amir’s performance is also in front of everyone. PSL is one of the best tournaments from where you select players, especially for T20s, and if somebody is available, we should only take into account their performance and Amir is one of those choices,” he was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

Pakistan’s next assignment will be a five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which will be held in Rawalpindi and Lahore from April 18 to 27.

Pakistan Squad for New Zealand T20I Series: Babar Azam (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Amir, Irfan Khan, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usama Mir, Usman Khan, Zaman Khan
