Pakistan chief selector Wahab Riaz has expressed a willingness to invest in wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan going forward, but made it clear that he expects the big-hitter to pay dividends.
Azam has been criticised for being overweight on numerous occasions, but he has worked hard to slim down, including losing 30kg in a 12-month period.
The 25-year-old was recently in action for the men in green in their five-match T20I series against New Zealand, but flopped in the three games he played, making scores of 10, 2 and 10.
Even though he has not lived up to expectations thus far, Wahab reiterated his commitment to picking Azam.
“We’ve spoken to him and given him a clear message, we want to invest in him, but he has to respond as well,” he was quoted as saying by respected journalist Saj Sadiq on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Azam is now representing Islamabad United in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL), which began on February 17.
