Azhar Ali has made it clear that “no such thought was in my consideration” when asked if he thought of stepping down as Pakistan’s Test captain.
Azhar came under immense criticism for his captaincy during the recent three-Test series against England, but despite a lot of blame for Pakistan’s performance falling on his shoulders, he never once felt that he should resign from the leadership role.
Even though he wants to continue captaining Pakistan, Azhar admitted that he went through a tough time after his side were beaten by three wickets in the first Test against England in Manchester.
Pakistan looked to be on course for victory, but an incredible performance by Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler saw England get over the line.
“There were tough times when we lost the first test, and it was blamed entirely on me,” Azhar was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan. “It was not easy but I focused only on how we could turn the series around, with my own performance and performance from the entire team. No such thought was in my consideration.”
