Mohammed Shami carved through South Africa’s batting line-up with a five-wicket haul to lead India to a 203-run win on the fifth day in Visakhapatnam.

Starting off the day on 11/1, South Africa only added eight runs to their overnight score before Theunis de Bruyn was clean bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin for 10 runs.

Ashwin’s dismissal of De Bruyn saw him become the joint-fastest player to take 350 Test wickets as he took 66 matches to achieve the feat, the same as legendary Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan.

Temba Bavuma failed to trouble the scorers as he was cleaned up by Shami for a duck.

Shami also took out captain Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock, while Aiden Markram was caught and bowled by Ravindra Jadeja for 39.

With Jadeja sending Veron Philander packing three balls later and trapping Keshav Maharaj lbw the very next ball, he took three wickets in an over and left South Africa reeling at 70/8.

However, Dane Piedt and debutant Senuran Muthusamy put up a fight as they forged a 91-run partnership, during which Piedt brought up his fifty, before he was clean bowled by Shami for a career-best 56, which came off 107 balls and included nine boundaries and a six.

South Africa ended up being bowled out for 191 when Kagiso Rabada was caught behind off the bowling of Shami for 18 runs.

Muthusamy was left stranded on 49, which came off 108 balls and included five boundaries.

Shami was the pick of the bowlers with five wickets, while Jadeja took four and Ashwin claimed one.

India opener Rohit Sharma was named Man of the Match for scoring 176 in the first innings and 127 in the second.
