Legendary Pakistan pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar has warned that newly-appointed head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq “will have to provide results in the next four to six months”.

Misbah was given the dual role on Wednesday, and his first assignment will be Pakistan’s limited overs series against Sri Lanka, which will start at the end of the month and consist of three ODIs in Karachi and three Twenty20 Internationals in Lahore.

Akhtar also noted that Misbah has to have an aggressive mindset and be fully focused on turning Pakistan’s fortunes around.

“Misbah also has an idea after being captain of where the Pakistan team needs to be,” Akhtar said on his YouTube channel as quoted by PakPassion. “People ask me whether he will be a defensive coach like he used to be a defensive captain, I don’t think he will be… he shouldn’t be.

“It’s a good idea and the benefit of keeping him there is that he knows the team and the players well.

“Results that will be produced, we will see. But the long discussion we always have [is] about giving time – we can’t give time because Pakistan is in a bad situation. They are at the bottom in Tests, they shouldn’t go down more. So we don’t have time now. Misbah will have to provide results in the next four to six months. He will need to make aggressive selections so that people know we are serious.

“The new system will have lots of flaws and we’ll have to give a margin of error to the board and we’ll have to give Misbah one or two series. Pakistan cricket has to become aggressive, we can’t play with another mindset and that was never our forte.

“The cricket we have played in the last five to 10 years was never our forte and Pakistan should avoid this type of cricket, so we need to see what Misbah will do. If Misbah isn’t strong then he won’t leave a legacy so he needs to make strong decisions and be firm in his decision making, and explain decisions to the media logically.

“People come and go, but only those ones make a name who are strong and leave a legacy behind.”
