Mickey Arthur firmly believes that had left-arm seamer Mohammad Amir not been banned for five years, he would be “up there with the very best Pakistan have ever had”.

Amir, who retired from Test cricket on Friday, was banned for five years due to his involvement that shocked the cricketing community in 2010.

Arthur also noted that Amir is not the same now as he was back in 2009 and 2010.

“The Amir hype all those years ago was justified because he is a quality bowler,” Arthur, who is waiting to see whether he will be retained as Pakistan’s head coach, told ESPNcricinfo. “When the ball swings there’s not much better. But he’s not the bowler now that he was in 2009 and 2010. He was different, his body was different. Making a connection between the bowler now and then would be wrong. But had he not had those five years out of the game, I think he would be up there with the very best Pakistan have ever had.”
