Legendary Pakistan batsman Zaheer Abbas firmly believes that Sarfraz Ahmed cannot continue captaining the national team in all three formats.

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Sarfraz’s future as captain following Pakistan’s failure to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals.

Some reports indicate he will be stripped of the captaincy entirely, while others state he will lead Pakistan in fewer formats.

Abbas agrees with the latter as he feels Sarfraz should either continue captaining the national team in Tests or limited overs cricket.

“As far as Sarfraz Ahmed’s captaincy is concerned, I think he must relinquish either the Test captaincy or ODI and T20 captaincy to focus on his own form,” Abbas told The Nation. “It will help ease the pressure on Sarfraz, the team and the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board).”

Abbas also admitted that it is imperative the PCB appoints a vice-captain.

“Pakistan needs to appoint a full-time vice captain keep in mind its long-term future. The vice-captain must be groomed for [captaining in the future]. Test cricket is a very important aspect of the game. We need to focus on producing top-class players for the longer format of the game. It is high time the PCB introduce revolutionary steps and implement a new domestic structure.”
