Former Pakistan pace bowler Sarfraz Nawaz believes that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have no choice but to retain Sarfraz Ahmed as captain as no one has been groomed to replace him.

Sarfraz Nawaz’s comments come after Pakistan failed to reach the semi-finals at the World Cup.

Once that happened, there was a lot of speculation surrounding Sarfraz Ahmed’s future as captain, with some reports saying that he would be stripped of the captaincy completely, while others stated that he would lead Pakistan in fewer formats.

However, while Sarfraz Nawaz would like to see Sarfraz Ahmed removed as captain, he pointed out that a proper vice-captain was never appointed and groomed to take over.

“I guess the PCB doesn’t have any option but to retain Sarfraz Ahmed as Pakistan captain as they never appointed a vice-captain and groomed him,” Sarfraz Nawaz was quoted as saying by The Nation. “Now Sarfraz should continue to lead the Pakistan team and he must make some bold decisions and prove himself that he is that leader who will take Pakistan forward. It makes no sense to [remove] Sarfraz as it will further aggravate the situation.

He also called on Pakistan Prime Minister and World Cup winning captain Imran Khan to sack the coaching staff, selection committee and every one else who has failed to live up to expectations.

“In Pakistan, people are still looking at the PCB and Imran Khan, who is not only the Prime Minister and the PCB’s patron, but also one of the best captains the cricket world had ever witnessed, to take some action against those responsible. [Imran] should act now and send the selection committee, coaches and all the flops home.

“I think it is high time [for] Imran [to] make tough decisions and clean [up] the PCB.”
