Shakib Al Hasan scored 51 and followed it up with a five-wicket haul as Bangladesh crushed Afghanistan by 62 runs in their World Cup match in Southampton.

Choosing to bowl first, Afghanistan got the early breakthrough they were looking for as Bangladesh opener Liton Das was dismissed by Mujeeb Ur Rahman for 16.

Tamim Iqbal and Shakib made up for the loss of Liton with a 59-run partnership before Tamim was clean bowled by Mohammad Nabi for 36.

Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim kept the runs flowing with a 61-run stand, during which Shakib brought up his fifty, before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Mujeeb for a 69-ball 51, which included a solitary boundary.

Soumya Sarkar suffered the same fate as Shakib after scoring three runs, but Rahim and Mahmudullah stabilised the innings with a 56-run partnership, during which Rahim registered his half-century, before Mahmudullah was removed by Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib for 27.

Rahim went on to score an 87-ball 83, which included four boundaries and a six, before he was caught by Nabi at extra cover off the bowling of Dawlat Zadran.

With Mosaddek Hossain smashing a quickfire 35, Bangladesh finished on 262/7.

Mujeeb was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Naib snapped up two, and Nabi and Dawlat chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 263 to win, Afghanistan got off to a solid start as Naib and Rahmat Shah amassed a 49-run partnership before Rahmat was caught by Tamim was mid-on off the bowling of Shakib for 24.

Hashmatullah Shahidi only made 11 runs before he was stumped by Rahim off the bowling of Mosaddek.

Naib went on to make 47 before he was dismissed by Shakib, who clean bowled Nabi for a duck two balls later.

Shakib then took out Asghar Afghan, while Ikram Alikhil was run out by Liton for 11.

Afghanistan continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 200.

Samiullah Shinwari was left unbeaten on 49, which came off 51 balls and included three boundaries and a six.

Shakib was the most successful bowler with five wickets, while Mustafizur Rahman took two, and Mosaddek and Mohammad Saifuddin claimed one wicket each.

Shakib was named Man of the Match.
