Sri Lanka seamer Nuwan Pradeep took a four-wicket haul as his side beat Afghanistan by 34 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in Cardiff.
Being put in to bat first, Sri Lanka got off to an excellent start as Kusal Perera and captain Dimuth Karunaratne amassed a 92-run partnership before Karunaratne was caught by Najibullah Zadran at long-on off the bowling of Mohammad Nabi for 30.
Kusal and Lahiru Thirimanne kept the runs flowing with a 52-run stand, during which Kusal brought up his half-century, before Thirimanne was clean bowled by Nabi for 25.
Nabi struck two balls later as he removed Kusal Mendis for two runs.
Nabi claimed his third wicket in the over two balls later as Angelo Mathews was caught by Rahmat Shah at first slip for a duck.
Dhananjaya de Silva failed to trouble the scorers as well as he was caught behind off the bowling of Hamid Hassan for a duck.
Things went from bad to worse for Sri Lanka as Thisara Perera was run out by Hashmatullah Shahidi for two runs.
Isuru Udana mustered 10 runs before he was cleaned up by Dawlat Zadran, while Kusal went on to score an 81-ball 78, which included eight boundaries, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Rashid Khan.
With Sri Lanka reeling at 182/8, the rain came and play was suspended.
After a lengthy delay, the match was reduced to 41 overs, but Dawlat and Rashid removed Lasith Malinga and Pradeep in quick time, which led to Sri Lanka being bowled out for 201.
Nabi was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Rashid and Dawlat snapped up two wickets apiece. As for Hamid, he chipped in with one.
Chasing 187 to win off 41 overs as a result of the DLS method coming into effect, Afghanistan got off to a brisk start before opener Mohammad Shahzad was caught by Karunaratne off the bowling of Malinga for seven runs.
Rahmat only made two runs before he was dismissed by Udana, while Hazratullah Zazai smashed a quickfire 30 before he was brilliantly caught by Thisara off the bowling of Pradeep.
Pradeep then took out Shahidi, while Thisara cleaned up Nabi for 11.
With Afghanistan struggling at 57/5, captain Gulbadin Naib and Najibullah halted Sri Lanka’s charge with a 64-run partnership before Naib was given out lbw off the bowling of Pradeep.
Rashid proceeded to be cleaned up by Pradeep, while Dawlat was sent packing by Malinga.
Najibullah went on to score a 56-ball 43 before he was run out by Karunaratne.
Afghanistan ended up being bowled out for 152 when Hamid was clean bowled by Malinga for six runs.
Pradeep was the most successful bowler with four wickets, while Malinga took three, and Thisara and Udana claimed one wicket each.
Pradeep was named Man of the Match.
