The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided not to renew head coach Mickey Arthur and chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq’s contracts when they expire after the World Cup, a source said.
The PCB source revealed that even if Pakistan win the World Cup, the duo will not be given new contracts.
“Changes will be made as to when Ehsan Mani took over as chairman and then brought in Wasim Khan as Managing Director. There was nothing they could do about the key positions since there was little time left before the World Cup. But both are not very happy with some of the decisions taken by Inzamam and Arthur as chief selector and head coach,” the source was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
The source added that as of now, former Pakistan captain Aamir Sohail is the frontrunner to take over as chief selector as he held the position from 2002 to 2004.
“Sohail’s name is top among the list of short-listed contenders. PCB’s managing director, Wasim Khan, will make the decision on new appointments for the position of the chief selector and head coach,” the source said.
As for Inzamam, there is a possibility he will become head coach of the national team.
However, that is just speculation right now as the source said the PCB are still unsure whether they want a foreign coach or a local one.
“There is even a lobby in the board which has talked about making Inzamam the head coach after the World Cup,” the source said.
The source also revealed that just before the Pakistan team set off to England, Arthur inquired about whether the PCB were planning to extend his contract.
“But Mickey was told a decision would be made later, and he should focus on the World Cup,” the source said.
The source added that whoever is appointed head coach will be given free rein to chose their support staff.
Meanwhile, former Pakistan left-arm seamer Saleem Jaffar is likely to be named chief selector of the national junior selection committee.
Pakistan will kick off their World Cup campaign against the West Indies in Nottingham on Friday.
