Pakistan batsman Azhar Ali is backing the national team to “surprise everyone again” as they have a knack of defying expectations at major tournaments.

Pakistan have struggled in ODIs this year as they were beaten 3-2 by South Africa and whitewashed 5-0 by Australia in the United Arab Emirates.

In their most recent ODI series against England, they were crushed 4-0.

However, the men in green can take confidence from the fact that they won the Champions Trophy in England in 2017.

With that in mind, Azhar believes that the men in green are capable of enjoying a successful Word Cup campaign.

“Pakistan will definitely be underdogs as far as the World Cup is concerned, but I know their strengths, we have been in this position before and hopefully we can surprise everyone again,” he was quoted as saying by Saj Sadiq on Twitter.

Pakistan will play two World Cup warm-up games against Afghanistan and Bangladesh in Bristol and Cardiff on May 24 and 26 respectively.

They will then begin their World Cup campaign against the West Indies in Nottingham on May 31.
