Legendary Australia captain Ricky Ponting doesn’t see Pakistan as favourites to win the World Cup and instead gave that honour to England.
Ponting’s comments come after England beat Pakistan 4-0 in their recently concluded ODI series.
However, Ponting noted that Pakistan are capable of causing upsets at the tournament.
He also pointed out that in addition to England, India and Australia are frontrunners to lift the coveted trophy.
“Initially, it would be England for two reasons,” Ponting told the Times of India. “England have started playing well in limited overs [cricket] and the tournament will be played on [their] home [soil]. Naturally, they will have some home advantage. But they will be challenged by India and Australia.
Speaking about teams like Pakistan, South Africa and the West Indies, Ponting said: “They are also good. This [will] be a very open World Cup. Although England are clear favourites, there are other strong teams who can cause upsets.”
Pakistan will play two World Cup warm-up games against Afghanistan and Bangladesh in Bristol and Cardiff on May 24 and 26 respectively.
They will then begin their World Cup campaign against the West Indies in Nottingham on May 31.
