Usman Khawaja scored a career-best 104 as Australia held their nerve and withstood India captain Virat Kohli’s 95-ball 123 to claim a 32-run win in the third ODI in Ranchi.

Khawaja was well supported by skipper Aaron Finch, who made 93.

Being put in to bat first, Australia got off to an incredible start as Khawaja and Finch amassed a 193-run partnership, during which both batsmen cruised past their fifties and were on the verge of bringing up their hundreds.

However, after toiling for over 30 overs, India finally got the breakthrough they were looking for in the 32nd over as Finch was trapped lbw off the bowling of Kuldeep Yadav for 93, which came off 99 balls and included 10 boundaries and three sixes.

Khawaja and Glenn Maxwell added 46 runs to the score before Khawaja was caught by Jasprit Bumrah at short midwicket off the bowling of Mohammed Shami for 104, which came off 113 deliveries and included 11 boundaries and a six.

Maxwell went on to score a 31-ball 47 before he was run out by Ravindra Jadeja.

Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb fell shortly after, but Marcus Stoinis and Alex Carey ensured Australia ended their innings on a high as they forged an unbeaten 50-run stand.

Stoinis finished on 31, which came off 26 balls and included four boundaries, while Carey remained undefeated on 21, which came off 17 deliveries and included three boundaries.

Thanks to them, Australia ended up making 313/5 off their 50 overs.

Kuldeep was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Shami chipped in with one.

Chasing 314 to win, India lost opener Shikhar Dhawan early on as he was caught by Maxwell at point off the bowling of Jhye Richardson for one run.

Rohit Sharma, who opened the batting with Dhawan, mustered 14 runs before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Pat Cummins.

Ambati Rayudu failed to have much of an impact as he was cleaned up by Cummins for two runs.

With India struggling at 27/3, Kohli and MS Dhoni came to the rescue with a 59-run partnership before Dhoni was clean bowled by Adam Zampa for 26.

Kohli and Kedar Jadhav kept the runs flowing with an 88-run stand before Jadhav was given out lbw off the bowling of Zampa for 26.

Kohli went on to score 123, which came off 95 balls and included 16 boundaries and a six, before he was cleaned up by Zampa.

Even though Vijay Shankar and Jadeja scored 32 and 24 runs respectively, India still fell short of their target as they were bowled out for 281.

Cummins, Richardson and Zampa took three wickets apiece, while Nathan Lyon claimed one.

Khawaja was named Man of the Match.
